3D printing in orthodontics

3D printing is becoming an increasingly valuable part of modern orthodontics, and we’re excited to bring this technology in-house with the addition of a new 3D printer to our South Jordan orthodontic practice. 3D printing can be used for a variety of applications in orthodontics, the main benefit being the creation of highly accurate digital models of our patients’ teeth after treatment. These digital models allow us to fabricate clear retainers more efficiently and with long-term benefits in mind.
Traditionally, we’ve taken alginate impressions, poured them in stone, and made retainers directly on those stone models. However, this process typically damages the model during retainer fabrication, meaning only one retainer can be made per impression. With digital scanning and 3D printing, we can now produce multiple retainers from a single 3D printed model without compromising its integrity. Even better, we back up these digital files for extra security, preserving your final tooth positions indefinitely. And perhaps best of all, this means our patients no longer have to deal with the uncomfortable process of alginate impressions.
This advancement has also allowed us to create a new orthodontic retention program called the Smile for Life plan. This package includes lifetime replacement retainers made from your saved digital model, so you don’t have to worry about losing or breaking your retainer and compromising your results. Retention is key to maintaining the alignment achieved through braces or clear aligners, and this plan gives our patients a long-term solution that protects both their smile and their investment in orthodontic treatment.
As part of the Smile for Life plan, we also include additional services like laser gingivectomy and teeth whitening—more details on these offerings will be shared in future blog posts. For now, we’re excited to continue improving your experience at our South Jordan orthodontic office by offering the latest in 3D printing technology to support your smile for years to come.
